La Nikon Z9 es la cámara sin espejo insignia de Nikon y la primera cámara con sensores apilados que eliminó por completo el obturador mecánico. El sensor CMOS apilado de 45,7 MP lee lo suficientemente rápido como para ofrecer disparos en ráfaga de 120 fps de 11 MP y vídeo interno RAW de 8K 60p sin artefactos de obturador enrollable. No hay retraso en la liberación del botón del obturador. La empuñadura vertical integrada alberga dos baterías EN-EL18d que ofrecen más de 700 fotogramas por carga y el visor Real-Live no muestra oscurecimiento incluso a 30 fps.
